action

The housewife and mother Ila, who lives in Mumbai, cooks for her husband Rajiv as she does every weekday and sends him lunch in a lunch box to the office. This is picked up by a Dabbawala , who takes it by bike to a train, where it is transported in racks and finally delivered to its recipient in the office. Although this traditional transport system works almost flawlessly, the lunch box does not reach the husband, but rather the widower Saajan Fernandes, who otherwise gets the rather unimaginative meals of a corner restaurant. In the evening Ila notices that her husband has not received her food. Which doesn't really interest him because he's having an affair with another woman.

On the advice of her neighbor Mrs. Deshpande ("Auntie"), with whom she usually talks through the ventilation shaft of her house, Ila puts a small letter in the lunch box next time. And she receives a letter in reply saying that she has used too much salt. Her neighbor then advises her to use a lot of chili this time. In response, Ila learns that the meal was really salted and that it left just a little too much heat.

This is how a lively correspondence develops. Saajan, otherwise taciturn and unsociable, now looks forward to his lunch every day. He's already sniffing the box at his desk. Since he is about to retire, he should train his young colleague Shaikh. At first he evades this, but as the correspondence with Ila progresses, his heart opens and soon he even shares his meals with his successor.

Ila and Saajan write about their daily experiences and get to know each other. Ila wants a meeting in a restaurant. On that day, she did not send him a lunch box. Both enter the restaurant, but Saajan does not reveal himself to her because he believes he is too old.

Ila asks the Dabbawala, who delivers regularly, about the address to which her lunch box is being delivered, and goes to Saajan's office with her daughter. However, he has since resigned and his successor is sitting at his desk. Saajan has also left his apartment and is taking the train to his retirement home in Nasik . A shaky old man sits across from him in his compartment, in the face of which Saajan realizes that he feels old for no reason, and so he returns to town. He also contacts the Dabbawalas ...

idea

a three-part lunch box

In India, especially in Mumbai , most office workers get their lunch freshly cooked from home. The lunch box, usually consisting of three to five round stainless steel tins stacked on top of each other, insulated in a colored bag, is delivered by "Dabbawalas" whose transport system has met with interest worldwide due to its high delivery accuracy.

Batra began making a documentary about the Dabbawalas of Mumbai in 2007 and accompanied several of them for around a week. When he heard about her personal experiences and stories about her customers, the central film idea came to him: the mix-up of a dabba that leads to a love story. He completed his first draft of the script in 2011.

production

Lunchbox is a production of the Indian DAR Motion Pictures with Sikhya Entertainment and the international partners Rohfilm (Germany), ASAP Films (France) and Cine Mosaic (USA). Co-production partners were ARTE France and the Indian National Film Development Corporation, with funding from the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg . In the run-up to production, filmmaker Batra presented his project as part of the Berlin International Film Festival 2012 at the “Talent Project Market”, which is part of the “ Berlinale Talents ” funding project, and advertised for international participation there.

Reviews

“Bolly and Hollywood are very far away here with this very fine hymn to the wonderful taste of affection. At the end of the year, the charming 'art house cinema' is offering a tingly, smell-intensive, lovingly entertaining screen sleeper fun with the film that was already popular at the Cannes Festival in spring. "

- Deutschlandradio Kultur

"A wonderful crossover film from India, which is about love and delicious food and whose motto that a wrong train can sometimes take you to the right station gives hope for the good end!"

- The world

“And yet, despite all the warmth of the heart that this film is able to arouse in its audience, Ritesh Batra remains committed to realism in his film, which was included in the renowned program of the Semaine de la Critique at the Cannes Film Festival: Although it seems for some time anything is possible between Ila and Saajan, but ultimately the romantic traits of this comedy do not get out of hand. So for them there is no redemption that deletes all boundaries, but both come closer to themselves, find a way out of isolation, paralysis, hopelessness. "

- Neue Zürcher Zeitung

“In a deliberately sober and realistic filmed ambience (Ila's kitchen, Saajan's open-plan office, and again and again the buses and trains in which commuters like him jostle at rush hour) a magical little love story full of sensuality unfolds here. When Ila is at the stove and lovingly simmering her delicious curries and chutneys, that in itself is a feast for the eyes. And you would like to reserve a table with the Indian immediately! "

- Bavarian radio

“Smell, taste, feel. The senses and hearts open at the same time. Director Ritesh Batra conjures up a magical alchemy of culinary art and longing for love when he delicately links the fates of a melancholy office worker (Irrfahn Kahn) and a lonely wife (Nimrat Kaur). An Indian art house film, masterfully staged against the backdrop of the lively megacity Mumbai. "
