Nashik or Nasik ( Marathi : नाशिक , Nāśik ; Hindi : नासिक , Nāsik ) is a city of millions northeast of Mumbai in the Indian state of Maharashtra .

Nashik is located in the north of the Western Ghats on the holy Godavari River at an altitude of about 570 m above sea level. d. M. The city of Mumbai is about 165 km (driving distance) to the southwest; the Indian capital Delhi is about 1250 km northeast. The climate is warm; rain actually only falls during the summer monsoon season .

Official population statistics have only been kept since 1991 and are published regularly. The sustained increase in urban population is mainly due to the immigration of families from the surrounding area.

A good 85% of the population are Hindus , almost 9% are Muslims , around 3% profess Buddhism , around 1% each are Jains or Christians and less than 0.5% are Sikhs . The proportion of the male population is around 11% higher than the female population. They speak Marathi , Hindi and Urdu .
economy
The Nashik region is the center of wine growing in India. Onions, tomatoes and sugar cane are also grown in the rural area. But Nashik is also an up-and-coming industrial city - many national and international companies (including Bosch ) have branches in Nashik. The most important industrial employer with over 7,000 employees is the aircraft manufacturer Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL).
history
Some episodes from the Ramayana epic are said to have taken place in Nashik (formerly Nasika or Nasikya ). Excavations have shown that the place on an old trade route between the ports on the coast and the cities of the Ganges plain has been around since the 5th century BC. Was continuously settled. During the time of the political dominance of Islam, the city was named Gulshanabad ; shortly before the British takeover in India , the name of the city was renamed under the Peshwas in Nashik. During the independence movement in India, the city played a minor role.
Kumbh Mela
In addition to Prayagraj , Haridwar and Ujjain , Nashik is one of the four cities in India in which a Kumbh Mela festival is celebrated every 12 years . On August 27, 2003, during the ritual bathing of millions of Hindus on the banks of the holy Godavari River in Nashik, a mass panic broke out , and 43 people were trampled to death. The next Kumbh Mela will take place in 2027.
Attractions
Despite its long history and cultural significance, there are no significant cultural and historical landmarks in central Nashik.
- The Kalaram Mandir is probably the oldest temple in the city, but the previous building was destroyed in Islamic times and only rebuilt in an aniconical Hindu-Islamic mixed style in the late 18th century. Inside, three small black statues of Rama , Sita and Lakshmana are venerated.
- The Neelkanteshwara Temple , dedicated to Lord Shiva , stands near the river bank ( ghat ) and is also an 18th century reconstruction.
- Surroundings
- Opposite the suburb of Ambad , about 8.5 km southwest of the center of Nashik, are the mainly Buddhist Pandavleni caves from the 3rd and 4th centuries. Century AD
- The Dharmachakra Jain temple, which was only built in 2007-2011, is located on an artificial hill about 12 km northeast of the city center within a large park-like area with four gate buildings ( toranas ). The temple has a central Shikhara tower and entrances from all four directions. The Jainas also operate a feeding station for free range cows ( goshala ) nearby .
- The Gargoti Mineral Museum , located almost 27 km to the southeast and inaugurated in 2001, shows minerals and (semi) precious stones from the area, but also from other regions of India.
- The Coin Museum , about 20 km west of the city, is the only one of its kind in India.
- The Trimbakeshwara temple , located about 10 km to the west of the small town of Trimbak , is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples in India.
