Hindustan Aeronautics Limited ( HAL ) is one of the key aerospace companies of the Indian Ministry of Defense. Its seat is in the Indian city of Bangalore . The main areas of the company are the manufacture of aircraft, aerospace technology, and communication and navigation equipment.
history
The company was founded in 1940 by Walchand Hirachand with the name Hindustan Aircraft in Bangalore to manufacture aircraft; the project was supported by the Kingdom of Mysore , in particular by Mirza Ismail. The British government bought a third of the shares in April 1941, believing there was a strategic need. In April 1942, it acquired the entire shareholding of Walchand Hirachand and other shareholders so that it could trade freely with the consequence should Japan attack during World War II . Ultimately, the Kingdom of Mysore refused to sell its stake, but handed over management to the British government. Thus the company was nationalized two years after it was founded.
It manufactured the first military aircraft in South Asia and is currently active in the development, manufacture and assembly of aircraft , jet engines , helicopters and their components. The company has locations across India, including Nashik , Korwa , Kanpur , Koraput , Lucknow and Hyderabad . The German engineer Kurt Tank developed the HF-24 Marut fighter-bomber , the first aircraft designed and built entirely in India .
Hindustan Aeronautics has a long history of collaborations with international and domestic aviation companies such as Sukhoi , Israel Aerospace Industries , Mikoyan-Gurevich , BAE Systems , Dassault Aviation , Dornier-Werke , the Aeronautical Development Agency and the Indian Space Research Organization .
In July 2006, HAL joined a joint venture with Samtel, a manufacturer of electronic display systems. This is to develop and produce digital aircraft instruments for HAL. This is the first state-private partnership in the military avionics field . The contracts for the equivalent of 2.8 billion euros were signed in the 2005-06 financial year.
