Koraput is the capital of the district of the same name in the southwest of the east Indian state of Odisha .
Koraput is located in the Eastern Ghats north of the Kolab Dam at an altitude of 874 m . Jeypore town is 15 km to the west .
Koraput, a Notified Area Council since June 30, 1953 , was converted into a municipality on February 24, 2014 . The city is divided into 21 wards . At the 2011 census, Koraput had 47,468 inhabitants.
The national highways NH 43 ( Jagdalpur - Vizianagaram ) and NH 326 ( Malkangiri - Rayagada ) cross in Koraput. The city is on the railway line (Jagdalpur – Rayagada).
