The Kolab Dam is located 8 km southeast of the city of Jeypore in the Koraput district in the southwest of the Indian state of Odisha on the upper reaches of the Sabari (also Kolab ).
The dam, completed in 1985/86, is owned by Odisha Hydro Power Corporation Ltd. operated.
The barrier structure forms a 630.5 m long gravity dam . The construction height is 54.5 m. The 11 flood gates extend over a length of 169.2 m.
The maximum water level is 858 m , the lowest water level at which water is still taken from the reservoir is 844 m . The total storage space of the reservoir is 1215 million m³, the storage space is 935 million m³. The reservoir has a maximum area of 114.32 km². The mean water level is 853.33 m .
The water is fed to the hydroelectric power station ( ⊙ ) near Jeypore via a tunnel and a pressure pipe. This has 4 vertical Francis turbines of 80 MW each. The mean height of fall is 253 m. The average annual output is 832.2 million kWh. Below the hydropower plant, some of the water is drained into irrigation channels. The dam is also used to supply drinking water to the cities of Damonjodi, Koraput , Sunabeda and Jeypore.
