Amravati ( Marathi : अमरावती , Amrāvatī ; also Amrawati or Amraoti ) is a city in the Indian state of Maharashtra . It is the capital of the Amravati district and has a population of just under 650,000 (2011 census).
Amravati is located in the Dekkan Plateau at 343 meters above sea level. NN, about 155 kilometers west of Nagpur . National Highway 6 ( Surat - Kolkata ) goes through the city, the Mumbai - Haora railway line is about 10 kilometers south. Amravati has cotton processing as its main industry . The plant is grown in the nearby plains of the Purna and Wardha rivers .
Amravati is the seat of the Diocese of Amravati .
