Bhiwandi ( Marathi भिवंडी, Bhivaṇḍī, Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation ) is a city in the Thane district in the Indian state of Maharashtra .

It has about 710,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

Bhiwandi is located 50 kilometers northeast of Mumbai on National Highway 3 (Mumbai- Agra ). Together with the cities of Navi Mumbai , Thane , Kalyan , Ulhasnagar , Dombivli , Mira-Bhayandar and Vasai-Virar , it forms the agglomeration of the greater Mumbai area. The average height above sea level is 24 meters.

The city has developed from a small town with a Marathic and Concan Muslim population since the 1930s to the center of the textile industry in Maharashtra. It has the largest number of looms in the country.
