Urojo

Urojo is a soup dish popular in East Africa , based on wheat flour, mashed mangoes , potatoes and the coloring yellow turmeric spice. Like many dishes in East Africa, Urojo is of Indian origin. However, the exact ingredients were adapted to the types of vegetables and fruits available locally in East Africa.

For broad sections of the indigenous population of Tanzania , Kenya and neighboring countries and the East African islands in the Indian Ocean, Urojo is an everyday dish. In cities like Stone Town ( Zanzibar ) and Dar es Salaam , it is typical for working people to eat urojo during their lunch break in and in front of small soup kitchens . The name Urojo means thick mixture in Swahili .

In addition to the hot basic soup, various cold chutneys diluted with water are served, which are mixed with the soup. Roasted and dried cassava chips and chilli spices are usually added to the soup.
