Mira-Bhayandar ( Marathi मीरा भयंदर, Mīrā Bhayandar) is a city in the Thane district in the Indian state of Maharashtra .

geography

Mira-Bhayandar is 40 kilometers north of Mumbai on the NH 8 highway . The area is on Salsette Island on Vasai Creek , an estuary of the Ulhas River . Together with the cities of Navi Mumbai , Thane , Kalyan-Dombivli , Ulhasnagar , Bhiwandi and Vasai-Virar , it forms the agglomeration of the greater Mumbai area.

The Sanjay Gandhi National Park is located southeast of the city .

population

In 2001 the city had 520,388 inhabitants (2001 census). In 2011, 814,655 inhabitants were counted (2011 census). About 53% of the population are male.
