Thane ( Marathi : ठाणे , Ṭhāṇe ; formerly Thana ) is a city in the Indian state of Maharashtra .

It belongs to the metropolitan area of Mumbai (Bombay) and has 1.8 million inhabitants. Thane is the administrative seat of the district of the same name .

geography

Thane is located not far northeast of Mumbai on the island of Salsette . Heavy rains can be expected in summer.

history

The first Indian train ran between Bombay and Thane on April 16, 1853 .

economy

The Indian headquarters of the German company Bayer AG and a shared service center of thyssenkrupp AG are located in the city.
