history

From pre-Christian times until 1347, the area - like the entire region - was ruled by various Buddhist and Hindu rulers. The first state known by name was the Maurya Empire , the last non-Muslim dynasty were the Yadavas of Devagiri. After decades of military clashes with Muslim regents in northern India, it was gradually occupied by Muslim armies between 1294 and 1500. After that, various Muslim dynasties ruled until 1730 (Sultanate of Delhi, Bahmani, Dekkan sultanates, the Great Mughals). From 1500 onwards, there was fierce fighting for rule on the coast between the Muslim rulers and the Portuguese. Between 1666 and 1730 the area gradually became part of the Hindu Marathon Empire. From the 16th century until British rule, there were a number of pirate bases on the coast. From 1774 to 1782 the British were able to establish themselves on the coast for the first time - but they had to give up these areas again under French pressure. After the defeat of the Marathas against the British, Thane came under the name Thana District in 1818 to the British Empire, more precisely to the British administrative region of Bombay Presidency . In 1869 part of the area was separated from Thane as the Kolaba District (now Raigad District ). Between 1883 and 1891 further areas were lost to this district. Between 1920 and 1960 there were further changes in the area. With the independence of India in 1947 and the reorganization of the country, it became part of the new state of Bombay State in 1950 . In 1960, Bombay State was divided and the area came to the newly created state of Maharashtra.
