The Akola district ( Marathi : अकोला जिल्हा ) is one of 35 districts of the state of Maharashtra in India .

The city of Akola is the administrative seat of the district that belongs to the Amravati division and the Vidarbha region . The last census in 2011 showed a total population of 1,813,906 people.

The urban population makes up 39.68 percent of the total population. A clear vast majority of the population are Hindus. The Muslims and Buddhists are significant minorities. In 2001, of the 1,629,633 inhabitants, 1,024,080 were Hindus (62.84 percent), 296,272 Muslims (18.18 percent) and 293,184 Buddhists (17.99 percent).

The most populous town in the district is the main town Akola. Other major cities with a population of more than 20,000 people are Akot , Balapur, Murtijapur, Patur, Telhara and Umri Pragane Balapur.
