The district of Solapur ( Marathi : सोलापूर जिल्हा ) is one of 35 districts of the state of Maharashtra in India .

The city of Solapur (Sholapur) is the administrative seat of the district. The last census in 2011 showed a total population of 4,317,756 people.

history

From pre-Christian times until 1347, the area - like the entire region - was ruled by various Buddhist and Hindu rulers. The first state known by name was the Maurya Empire , the last non-Muslim dynasty were the Yadavas of Devagiri. After decades of military clashes with Muslim rulers in northern India, it was gradually occupied by Muslim armies from 1294 onwards. After that, various Muslim dynasties ruled until 1795 (Sultanate of Delhi, Bahmani, Dekkan sultanates, the Mughals and the Nizam of Hyderabad). From 1700 the area gradually became part of the Hindu Marathon Empire. After the defeat of the Marathas against the British, it came to the British Empire, more precisely to the British administrative region Bombay Presidency . In 1822 the Nizam transferred another 232 villages to the Sholapur district, which was a sub-district of the Ahmednagar district until 1838 . After the death of the last Raja of Satara in 1848 another 488 villages came to the district. Between 1864 and 1869, the Sholapur district disappeared from the map entirely. In 1869 it was re-established in a modified form and expanded by some areas in 1875. With the independence of India in 1947 and the reorganization of the country, it became part of the new state of Bombay State in 1950 . Between 1947 and 1950 the district grew through the incorporation of parts of various prince states and through the cession of some areas from the Hyderabad state. In 1960, Bombay State was divided and the area came to the newly created state of Maharashtra.

Population development

As everywhere in India, the population in the Solapur district has been growing rapidly for decades. However, growth slowed in the years 2001–2011 to around 12 percent (12.16%). Nevertheless, in these ten years the population increased by almost 470,000 people. The following table shows the exact numbers:

Significant places

The most populous place in the district is Solapur (Sholapur) with over 950,000 inhabitants. Other important cities with a population of more than 25,000 people are Barshi , Pandharpur , Akkalkot , Akluj and Sangole . The urban population makes up only 32.40 percent of the total population.

A clear vast majority of the population are Hindus. Numerous significant minorities are the Muslims and Buddhists. The following table shows the exact religious composition of the population:

District population by language

A clear vast majority of around 72 percent of the population speaks Marathi. However, there are some major minorities. The most important linguistic minorities with more than 100,000 native speakers are Kannada, Urdu, Telugu and Hindi. Marwari (Hindi dialect with Marathi influences) and Lamani / Lambadi are spoken by over 20,000 people each. The following table shows the exact linguistic composition of the population:
