The Kolhapur District ( Marathi : कोल्हापूर जिल्हा ) is one of 35 districts of the Maharashtra state in India .

The city of Kolhapur is the administrative seat of the district. The last census in 2011 showed a total population of 3,876,001 people.

history

From pre-Christian times until 1347, the area - like the entire region - was ruled by various Buddhist and Hindu rulers. The first state known by name was the Maurya Empire , the last non-Muslim dynasty were the Yadavas of Devagiri. After decades of military clashes with Muslim rulers in northern India, it was occupied by Muslim troops in 1347. Thereafter, various Muslim dynasties ruled until 1700 (Sultanate of Delhi, Bahmani, Dekkan sultanate and the Mughals). In 1700, under the name of Kolhapur Gadi ( Kolhapur (state) ; also called Karavira or Karvir), the area became an independent part of the Hindu Marathas Empire . In 1812, the then ruler Sivaji III. under British patronage. Kolhapur became an independent princely state within the British Empire. In 1817 his troops fought on the British side against the Marathas. The British then ruled through Rajas . The principality was part of the Kolhapur and Southern Maratha Agency within the British administrative region of Bombay Presidency . With the independence of India in 1947 and the reorganization of the country, it became part of the new state of Bombay on March 1, 1949 . In 1960, Bombay was divided and the area came to the newly created state of Maharashtra.

Population development

As everywhere in India, the population in the Kolhapur district has been growing rapidly for decades. The increase slowed down in the years 2001–2011, however, and was only just under 10 percent (10.01%). In these ten years, the population increased by more than 350,000 people. Significant places

The most populous place in the district is Kolhapur with almost 550,000 inhabitants. Other major cities with a population of more than 25,000 people are Ichalkaranji , Jaysingpur , Kabnur , Kagal , Uchgaon , Hupari , Gadhinglaj and Vadgaon Kasba . The urban population makes up only 31.73 percent of the total population.

District population by language

A clear vast majority of the population speaks Marathi. Significant linguistic minorities with more than 100,000 native speakers are Urdu and Kannada. Hindi (with Hindi dialects around 126,000 people), Marwari (Hindi dialect with Marathi influences), Telugu, Sindhi and Gujarati (14,285) are spoken by over 10,000 people as their mother tongue.
