flora
The reserve is characterized by dense forests, which are divided into the three areas of Vasota , Maharkhor and Indavli Met . Lake Shivasagar, which was dammed up for the use of water power , and the Western Ghats Mountains form the natural boundaries. There are extensive moist deciduous forests and subtropical rainforests in which rare species such as the longan tree and oil fruit trees of the genus Elaeocarpus grow. Climbing plants are particularly common, as are medicinal and aromatic plants.
fauna
The wildlife is very diverse: Here live Bengal tiger , Indian leopard , Indian bison , sloth bear , sambar or horse deer, barking deer , mouse deer , gray langur , otters and giant squirrel . Among the birds are the round-tailed woodpecker , the red chalk woodpecker , the rare brown-headed woodpecker ( Dendrocopos nanus ), the elven blue bird , the dragged nightjar ( Caprimulgus climacurus ) and the crested hawk ( Accipiter trivirgatus ). Numerous reptiles such as the light tiger python and the king cobra as well as rare amphibians are common here.
geography
The Shivasagar reservoir extends over a length of up to 50 km and covers an area of up to 891.78 km². The water depth reaches 80 m. When the dam was built in the early 1960s, the landscape was permanently changed. Since 1967 17 earthquakes M ≥ 5, over 150 earthquakes M ≥ 4 and several thousand smaller earth tremors have been registered, some of which are triggered by the pressure of the large body of water. The Koyna River is a tributary of Krishna .
