The film deals with the Nanking massacre and its aftermath during the Second Sino-Japanese War . The film is also known as Nanking! Nanking! or Nanjing! Nanjing! .

City of Life and Death is set in 1937, shortly after the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War . The Imperial Japanese Army has just occupied the then capital of the Republic of China , Nanking . What follows is generally known as the Nanking massacre , in which at least 200,000 Chinese prisoners of war and civilians were killed over a period of several weeks .

The film was first released in theaters in China on April 22, 2009. In Germany it was released on October 11, 2010 as direct-to-video on DVD and Blu-Ray under the title City of Life and Death - Das Nanjing Massaker .
Awards
The film won the Golden Shell at the 2009 San Sebastián International Film Festival . The film also won awards for Best Director ( Lu Chuan ) and Best Cinematography (Cao Yu) at the 4th Asian Film Awards in 2010 , as well as an award for Best Cinematography at the 46th Golden Horse Film Festival , where he also won the best visual effects was nominated. At Oslo Film Festival 2009 won City of Life and Death in the category "Best Film".
