action

The Japanese Toshio lives with his wife Akie and his daughter Hotaru in a small Japanese town. Toshio runs a small workshop that one day Yasaka comes to, who he hires and lets live with him. Although Akie is initially skeptical, she takes a liking to Yasaka's polite manner. She sews a red dress for her daughter Hotaru, who practices on the harmonium for a competition. Yasaka and Akie get closer and closer and he confesses to her that he has already been in jail for murder. It turns out that Yasaka is also an excellent harmonium player and helps Hotaru with practice. The parents suddenly find Hotaru lying on the playground with a head injury. They suspect Yasaka, who fled the family. From now on, Hotaru is a nursing case.

Eight years later, Toshio hires Takashi, a new assistant. He is also allowed to live with the family, but Akie is suspicious of him. It turns out that Takashi is Yasaka's son but has no contact with his father. When Akie learns this, she is initially understanding towards Takashi, but later becomes angry. Toshio explains to his wife that he only hired Takashi to find out where Yasaka was. He also confesses to her that he carried out the murder with Yasaka, with Yasaka covering him.

When a detective takes pictures of Yasaka in a village, the four of them drive there. On the drive, Akie explains to Takashi that they will murder him there in front of Yasaka, but later says that this was just a joke. Once there, they realize that it is a mistake, as they are standing in the living room with a complete stranger. They are now driving to a river, where Akie and Hotaru push off the bridge and Toshio saves them from the water. In the final shot you can see Toshio trying to revive her.

criticism

“And yet the harmonium can only be compared to a very limited extent with psychological thrillers à la Funny Games or Replicas - In their Skin, where evil intruders go to work to destroy nice families. [...] Associated with this are ethical questions that nobody can really answer. Or want to. Sometimes it looks more like an experimental setup than a real story. There is more than enough food for thought. "
