Cannes International Film Festival 2016
The 69th Cannes International Film Festival took place from May 11-22, 2016. For the third time, they were under the direction of President Pierre Lescure , while Thierry Frémaux, as General Delegate, was responsible for the artistic direction.
The jury president of the international competition, which among other things will award the Palme d'Or for the best film at the festival, was the Australian filmmaker George Miller this year . The main prize was awarded to the social drama Ich, Daniel Blake (I, Daniel Blake) by Briton Ken Loach , who won the competition for the second time since 2006 .
The French actor Laurent Lafitte was chosen to host the opening ceremony and the final award gala .
The film festival opened with Woody Allen's Café Society with Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg in the lead roles, which was shown out of competition. Allen had already opened the film festival with Hollywood Ending in 2002 and Midnight in Paris in 2011 . Since Manhattan (1979), Café Society was the 14th film the director had shown outside of the competition in Cannes.
In the official sections, including the International Competition, the final program was officially presented on April 14, 2016. The tragic comedy Toni Erdmann by Maren Ade competed for the Golden Palm . It was the first contribution by a German filmmaker since Wim Wenders' Palermo shoot in 2008 . Furthermore, Thierry Frémaux invited five film productions from Amazon Studios for the first time , including Woody Allen's film, the latest works by Jim Jarmusch and Nicolas Winding Refn , but no films from the competing streaming service Netflix . Amazon had promised regular cinema premieres for the films, not streaming premieres.
The winner was the French actor Jean-Pierre Léaud , who was awarded the Palme d'Or as an honorary prize for his life's work . Léaud received the award at the closing ceremony on May 22nd.
Due to the terrorist attacks on November 13, 2015 in Paris and the declared state of emergency in France, the security precautions for the festival were strengthened, including the Israeli anti-terrorist expert Nitzan Nuriel was involved in the preparation. Due to the tightened protocols, the screenings of four films from the parallel section Quinzaine des realisateurs had to be canceled.

The festival poster was created from stills from the film Contempt (1963) by Jean-Luc Godard . It shows the French actor Michel Piccoli in the role of the screenwriter Paul Javal as he climbs the steps to Villa Malaparte on the island of Capri . The steps should represent a kind of ascent to the infinite horizon of a movie screen.
