American Honey is a British - American feature film by director and screenwriter Andrea Arnold . The main actress Sasha Lane made her acting debut in this film, as did most of the rest of the cast. Shia LaBeouf , Riley Keough and Will Patton can also be seen in other roles .

The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2016 , where it screened in international competition and was awarded the Jury Prize.

The eighteen-year-old star lives in precarious circumstances in Oklahoma after her mother chose to live without her daughter. Together with her two half-siblings, Star ekes out a sad life with her stepfather, who is not afraid to approach the young woman in a sexist way.

When she meets Jake, a young man who travels through the country with a youthful " push column ", she joins the group without further ado. A road trip through the Midwest begins together . During the day the youngsters try to sell magazine subscriptions at doorstep shops , while the nights they spend with alcohol and parties.

The film received largely positive reviews from US critics. Based on 205 evaluated reviews, the Rotten Tomatoes website gave 80% positive ratings with an average rating of 7.37 / 10 points. In summary, it says: " American Honey is a refreshingly unconventional coming-of-age drama, the narrative risks of which do not all work, but make the film an experience that is well worth seeing."

Awards

The film was in Cannes with the Jury Prize awarded and got a special mention of the Ecumenical Jury .

At the 2016 British Independent Film Awards , American Honey won Best Picture, Best Director (Andrea Arnold), Best Actress (Sasha Lane), and Best Technology (Robbie Ryan (camera)). He was also nominated in the category for best screenplay.

The film was also nominated for the Art Cinema Award at the Hamburg Film Festival and for best film at the Portuguese LEFFest.

When the nominations for the Independent Spirit Awards 2017 were announced, the film received six nominations: film, director, leading actress (Sasha Lane), supporting actress (Riley Keough), supporting actor (Shia LaBeouf) and cinematography.

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.
