Lloyd Kaufman (born December 30, 1945 in New York City , New York ) is an American producer , director , screenwriter and actor of independent films . He has directed over fifty films since the late 1960s and produced over a hundred films, mostly for his own low-budget production company Troma Entertainment, which he subscribes to Trash and Splatter . His best-known film is Atomic Hero ( The Toxic Avenger ) from 1985. In addition to his work behind the camera, he also appears very often in small roles as an actor.

Life

Lloyd Kaufman, the brother of horror film director Charles Kaufman , actually wanted to work on Broadway rather than produce films. However, Roger Corman's B-Movies fascinated him, and when he had the opportunity to produce a short film for a fellow student friend, his interest in film increased. Kaufmann bought a camera, drove to Chad and spent the summer there. There he made a 15-minute film about pig slaughter. His family were shocked by the pictures during the screening; Kaufmann wondered if shocks would tie the audience to the cinema seats.

He made a second film with some friends (1969). People liked the movie, so Kaufman headed for Hollywood . He worked hard to be featured in the credits. He also saved up so that he could produce his next film: a full-length homage to Harold Lloyd and Charlie Chaplin . Although Kaufman wasn't happy with the film, the audience liked it.

Together with Oliver Stone and Frank Vitale , he founded the production company 15th Street Films . They brought u. a. Sugar Cookies and Cry Uncle , in which Kaufman himself appeared, on the market. After Stone left the production company in 1973, Kaufman brought Michael Herz into the team. The first film they produced together flopped and ruined the company.

Kaufman and Herz founded Troma Studios in 1974 . Even the first film - The Devine Obsession from 1976 - brought her out of the red. The next project, the strip Hot Balls (1980), could only be brought to the man at the last moment and was also a success. In the period that followed, erotic comedies were produced, but Kaufman soon realized that there was an oversupply of comedies. Choosing to combine laughter and shock, he produced Atomic Hero (The Toxic Avenger) in 1985 .

To date, Troma has produced over 1000 films and became known as the Trash Factory. Kaufman worked increasingly as a director. Since 1980 he has often used the pseudonym Samuel Weil .
