Houda Benyamina , also Uda Benyamina , (born November 30, 1980 in Viry-Châtillon ) is a French film director and screenwriter .

Life

Benyamina grew up as the daughter of Moroccan immigrants in Viry-Châtillon. Her mother had come to France in the 1970s at the age of 17; her father left the family after a while and returned to Morocco. As a child, Benyamina was interested in films and played in school theater. She obtained the professional qualification (CAP) as a hairdresser, but decided against this profession, got her baccalaureate and attended the École régionale des acteurs de Cannes (ERAC). She first wanted to be an actress. The monotony of scripts with always similar role clichés finally led her to write scripts and become active as a director. Several short films were made, including Paris vs Banlieue in 2006 . In 2006 Benyamina founded the 1000 Visages association , which aims to promote diversity in film art and, among other things, enables artists from marginalized groups to implement their works. With 1000 Visages she also produced her own works, including the short film Ma poubelle géante in 2009 and the medium- length film Ghetto Child in 2014 , which she directed together with Guillaume Tordjman .

Her debut feature film, Divines, premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2016 . Benyamina had already started the script for the film in 2005 in the wake of the unrest in France . As in Ghetto Child , Benyamina cast her little sister Oulaya Amamra in the lead role. Benyamina received the Caméra d'Or for Divines . Numerous other awards followed, including three Prix Lumières and three Césars (among others in the category Best First Work ). At the Golden Globe Awards in 2017 was Divines in the category Foreign Language Film Best nominated.

Benyamina is the mother of two children.
