action

In a bar, crane operator Samir witnesses how a colleague of Agathe is resolutely turned away. The colleague tells him that Agathe works as a lifeguard in the swimming pool in Montreuil . Samir logs into the swimming pool. When he sees that Agathe is teaching swimming, he claims to be a non-swimmer. By a trick he ends up in Agathe's swimming course and by chance learns from a colleague that Agathe is widowed. When he was locked in the swimming pool one evening, he met Agathe in the closed bathroom, who loves the quiet and often does her laps in the bathroom in the evening. Both get closer that evening and Samir tells her that he was thrown into the water by his father as a child and has been afraid of swimming ever since. They retreat to the 5-meter tower when a colleague Agathes and two young women come into the bathroom. One of the women falls into the water drunk and Samir saves her. Agathe realizes that Samir lied to her; The next time he appears in the swimming pool and asks about her, he learns that she has flown to Iceland to take part in the International Swimming Teachers' Congress. On the spur of the moment, he flies after her.

Agathe is staying in Iceland with her friend Anna, who alternates with her assistant Frosti as a city councilor. She is the organizer of the congress at which Agathe gives the opening speech. Agathe sees Samir sitting in the audience, who has mixed with the participants as a representative of Israel. She spontaneously asks him for a speech and Samir improvises a statement in which he talks about a swimming pool construction project that he is planning together with the Palestinians and that is supposed to be a sign of peace. The congress participants are enthusiastic. Agathe, however, is all the more upset, but cannot avoid Samir because he has also stayed with Anna, whom he knows from Montreuil, for the time of the congress.

At breakfast, Samir is electrocuted at the coffee machine in Anna's kitchen and loses his memory as a result. Agathe initially believes that he is simulating, but then helps him in everyday life and is a little disappointed that he no longer knows that he has followed her. He no longer knows that he loved her; Agathe, on the other hand, does not want to admit her feelings for him. Since water is supposed to be good for Samir's recovery, she goes swimming with him. When Samir goes on an excursion with the congress participants, Agathe wants to follow him. However, she ends up with Anna and Frosti at Anna's acquaintances, where a wise old woman reads her coffee grounds and encourages her to allow changes in her life and to overcome old fears. Anna can locate Samir in a thermal spring and drives there with Agathe. Here Samir and Agathe embrace and finally kiss deeply.

The effect of the water was filmed from October 2014 to May 2015 in the Maurice Thorez swimming pool in Montreuil, as well as in Reykjavík and at Keflavík Airport in Iceland. The costumes were created by Anne Blanchard and Marie Le Garrec , the film construction was done by Drifa Freyju-Ármannsdottir and Marie Le Garrec.

The effect of the water was the end of a trilogy set in Iceland and France around the characters Anna (Didda Jónsdóttir) and Agathe (Florence Loiret Caille), which started right back in 2008 with Bin and was continued in 2012 with Queen of Montreuil . Sólveig Anspach directed both films and Sólveig Anspach and Jean-Luc Gaget wrote the scripts together. When Anspach died "in the final phase of editing" The Effect of Water , Gaget completed the film as a director.

The song Agathe, Samir and Anna hear in the bar is Scared Things En Effet by Bang Gang , whose singer Barði Jóhannsson has a guest appearance in the film. Bouli Lanners can be seen on a poster as Emile Van Den Broek, initiator of the congress. As in Bin right back and Queen of Montreuil , numerous amateur actors appear in The Effect of Water , some of whom improvised.

The effect of water had its premiere on May 18, 2016 as part of the Quinzaine des réalisateurs at the Cannes International Film Festival and was shown in French cinemas on June 29, 2016. In Germany, the film was released on May 25, 2017.
