Samal Jesljamowa ( Kazakh Самал Ілиясқызы Есләмова ; Russian Самал Ильясовна Еслямова ; English transcription Samal Yeslyamova * 1. September 1984 in Petropavlovsk , Kazakhstan SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Kazakh actress . She won the Best Actress Award at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2018 for her leading role in the drama Ayka .

Life

Jeslyamova was discovered by agents of the director Sergei Dvorzewoi shortly after graduating from school at an open casting in her hometown of Petropavl . He was looking for talented actors for his drama Tulpan about shepherds in the Kazakh steppe. Jesljamowa played the sister of the main character and thus one of the most important supporting roles. The film, which premiered in 2008 after four years of shooting, won the Un Certain Regard section at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival and was the Kazakh entry for an Oscar in the category Best Foreign Language Film in 2009.

After the shooting of Tulpan , Jesljamowa completed an acting training at the Russian Academy for Theater Arts in Moscow between 2007 and 2011 .

For Sergei Dworzewoi, Jesljamowa was in front of the camera again, this time for the lead role of Ayka in the film of the same name, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018 and was also nominated for the Palme d'Or . Jesljamowa was honored as best actress for her embodiment of a young Kyrgyz mother who, driven by financial difficulties, leaves her child in the birth house and is desperate to look for work in Moscow. She is the first actress from the former Soviet Union to win the award. She was also awarded the prize for best actress at the Antalya Film Festival . She was also named best actress at the Asian Film Award in 2019 .
