The film Eat Drink Man Woman ( Chinese  飲食 男女 , Pinyin Yǐn Shí Nán Nǚ ) from 1994 is Ang Lee's third feature film and captures the story of a father, his daughters and the culinary arts of Taiwan in expressive images. It forms the final part of the so-called Father knows best trilogy with the first two films Pushing Hands and The Wedding Banquet . The title is a quote from the book of rites : "Drink and food and the enjoyment of love, these are the most important instincts of people", Chinese. 「飲食 男女 , 人 之 大 欲 存焉」 .

action

A widowed master cook , Mr. Zhu ( 老朱 , Lǎo Zhū ), and his three adult daughters, Zhū Jiāzhēn ( 朱家珍 ), Zhū Jiāqiàn ( 朱家倩 ) and Zhū Jiāníng ( 朱家寧 ), live together in an old, well-kept house in what is otherwise Central district of the capital Taipei of Taiwan, characterized by high-rise buildings .

The not always easy is shown detachment process of the daughters from their parents and the partially authoritarian father. Love and family, i.e. the search for the right partner for life, are the central motif of the film alongside the art of cooking. As the title of the film suggests, these are the most essential needs of every human being: food, drink, man and woman.

Master Zhu realizes that he is increasingly losing his sense of taste , but the every Sunday dinner offers the opportunity for family members to exchange ideas or out of the blue to introduce a future spouse, which is comical in a film that is otherwise categorized as cheerful drama. The biggest surprise in the end is the father himself, who explains during dinner that he wants to marry his oldest daughter's former school friend.

The eldest and youngest daughter, who found a man for life in the course of the film, and now the father too, leave the house. What remains is the second eldest daughter, played by Wu Qianlian , who would have always liked to learn the profession of cook, but didn't dare to do so under the pressure of expectation from her father, and who now ends up serving her father so good a soup that he tastes good again can.

Marginal act

The film also shows many similarities and differences between western-modern (European / US-American) and eastern-traditional (Taiwanese) culture. These are underpinned again and again by cross-references to cultural topics, for example with regard to food, living culture and family structures.

In addition, the film reports on the difficulties Taiwanese people have when emigrating to the USA and the hurdles they have to overcome when integrating. This aspect is closely related to the biography of Ang Lee, who was born in Taiwan and lives in New York.

Reviews

  • “Ang Lee remains true to the path he started with ' The Wedding Banquet ': Once again, with a wink, he dedicates himself to the basic needs of life and talks about family, tradition and the difficulties of communication between the generations in an entertaining way . A touching network of relationships. " ( Blickpunkt: Film )
  • “After his surprise success 'The Wedding Banquet', New York-based Ang Lee, who lives in New York, dedicates himself to the elementary basic needs of life in 'Eat Drink Man Woman' : food and sex. His film, a story about family, tradition, different views of life and the universal generation conflict is based on these two pillars. With appropriate (word of mouth) propaganda, 'Eat Drink Man Woman' should find and inspire its viewers. " (VideoWoche)
  • “The loneliness of aging, lack of understanding in the family, love, marriage and betrayal, sex, jealousy and life lies . That would provide material for at least a dozen melodramas elsewhere . Ang Lee mixed everything well and turned it into an entertaining cocktail , spiced with speed, wit and a little shrill and seasoned with benevolent indulgence. " ( Epd Film - Issue 9/1994)
  • “A lovable comedy that creates episodes of their everyday lives with great affection for the characters. Using the example of 'eating and drinking, man and woman', he delicately and cautiously describes human feelings that have gotten out of balance and make communication between the generations difficult. ” ( Lexicon of the international film )
