reception

Age rating

The film is rated 12th grade in Germany . The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film empathically portrays and differentiates the conscience of its protagonist with the help of long dialogue scenes, reflections and flashbacks. It is mostly told calmly, but also contains some dramatic depictions of war, which children under the age of 12 can overly stress. "

Reviews

The film has so far won over 45 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics (out of a total of 107 critics).

Owen Gleiberman of Variety says the film is not only a technical point of an experiment, but also tell a very original, insightful and compelling story, with a strength of the film is how it combined these two things together.

Andreas Busche from the Tagesspiegel calls the film a bitter comment on America's aspirations for great power and explains that its virtuosity occasionally makes one forget that Ben Fountain 's 2012 novel was designed as a satire on America's self-image. Ang Lee takes this ironic stance more formally, says Busche, but the fast-paced dialogues and the frenetic mobility still reminded us that there is a discrepancy between the spoken word and the staging in the film.

Fabian Tietke from the taz is impressed with how the film manages to translate the individual psychological drama into general terms using American archetypes. Thomas Willmann from artechock complains that the sophisticated technology of the film has remained invisible in German cinemas because the film shot in 3D and high frame rate is only shown in 2D with normal frame rate in Germany.

Awards

Ang Lee received the "John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing" at the BAFTA Los Angeles 2016 Britannia Awards. Mychael Danna was named "Composer of the Year" for the film song For Storks at the Hollywood Film Awards 2016.
