action

Amelia and Laura, who live in New York City , are around 30 years old. They have been friends since childhood. Laura works as a therapist, Amelia - as an editor.

Laura's boyfriend proposes marriage, and Laura worries about how Amelia receives the message. Amelia broke up with her partner, with whom she remains friends. He sometimes borrows money from her, which he uses to finance phone sex, among other things.

Amelia flirts with the clerk of a video store, Bill, who invites her to a meeting of film fans. Meanwhile, Laura prepares for her wedding, with Amelia and other friends helping her. She gets support from Frank, from Andrew - with whom she used to have a relationship - as well as from a pen pal.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on July 26, 1996 that the film was subtle - it was neither a soap opera nor a melodrama. The critic likes the way the film shows things that would have led to "great dramaturgical formulas" in the other films . Amelia is not a desperate woman, but simply an intelligent person who does nothing wrong. It is not exactly “great cinema” , but Ebert was in a good mood while watching ( “I didn't feel in the presence of great cinema, but I felt cheerful” ).

Kevin Thomas wrote in the Los Angeles Times on July 17, 1996 that the debut director and screenwriter was skillfully displaying the inadvertent injuries and unexpected vulnerabilities that would inevitably be part of the close relationship. Holofcener resist the temptation to make their main characters adorable - they are edgy and often tactless, which makes them appear real.

Film-Dienst wrote that Walking and Talking was a “melancholy comedy that did not open up any new dimensions to the genre” , but touched on some subplots” andunderstood how to condense the subject of the film” .

Awards

Nicole Holofcener was nominated in 1996 for the Grand Jury Prize of the Sundance Film Festival and for a Special Prize of the Deauville Film Festival .
