Deadly proximity (original title: Striking Distance ) is an American thriller directed by Rowdy Herrington starring Bruce Willis and Sarah Jessica Parker from 1993 . The original name was Three Rivers .

action

The Pittsburgh policeman Tom Hardy, like his two cousins, comes from a family of police officers. He testified against his cousin Jimmy Detillo for the disproportionate use of force on duty, thereby breaking the unwritten police code to remain silent about internal crimes. Tom's homicide division is looking for a serial killer who killed four women. Hardy thinks a cop is the killer. He expresses this suspicion publicly and is therefore attacked by his colleagues. An unknown suspect is being followed in his car. His car and that of Hardy and his father roll over. When Hardy is pulled out of the car, the suspect has disappeared and his father is dead. A witness appears, with whose help a suspect named Kesser is caught. Hardy doubts it is the killer and is transferred to the water police. Jimmy Detillo jumps off a bridge after his trial in the presence of his father Nick, brother Danny and Toms. Danny Detillo then becomes an alcoholic and has to give up the police service.

Two years later, female corpses reappear who, in Hardy's opinion, were killed by the same killer. The perpetrator also targets women who used to be with Hardy and puts the corpses down so that they can be found by Hardy. This gives the impression that Hardy himself may have committed the murders. In order to be able to bring Hardy into further distress, an undercover colleague of the internal investigation is assigned to him by his uncle as a new partner (Jo Christman alias Emily Harper). However, she falls in love with Hardy and testifies in front of a commission in his favor.

The perpetrator murders the water police dispatcher , kidnaps Harper and overpowers Hardy in the Detillos recreational hut, where he also keeps Danny prisoner. It turns out it's Jimmy, who was believed dead. Nick Detillo was the first at the scene of the chase, rescued the suspect from the wreckage and let him escape when he realized that it was his son Jimmy. Hardy's father, who wanted to shoot after the hobbling away, was harassed by Nick and accidentally killed. Nick and Jimmy then later staged the suicide.

When Nick arrives, there is a fight between father and son, during which Jimmy kills his father in an exchange of fire and Hardy escapes in handcuffs. When the police show up, the perpetrator can only escape by boat. Hardy boards a police boat and catches Jimmy after a chase in which his boat crashes into an obstacle. Both fight in the water, eventually Hardy wins the upper hand and kills Jimmy in self-defense with his stun gun, which he steals from him. Tom and Emily, who has a young daughter from their first marriage, begin a future together.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that he found the film disappointing. He wondered why a good actress like Sarah Jessica Parker would want to play the "uninteresting" and "stupid" character of Jo Christman. He criticized the portrayal of Bruce Willis as "irritating". Berardinelli also criticized the dialogues and the film clichés. He scoffed that someone named Rowdy Herrington should have made a better film if he didn't want to be mistaken for a professional wrestler.

Roger Ebert criticized the film clichés in the Chicago Sun-Times of September 17, 1993, which he listed individually. Then he mocked the script and said that the clichés could be used again if the material was filmed with the necessary sense of style or with new energy.

“A technically complex, but dramaturgically untrustworthy thriller, which all too obviously lays the wrong track and whose dissolution seems far-fetched. The partially spectacular view of the unspoilt backdrop of the city of Pittsburgh is appealing. "
