Beatrice "Bebe" Neuwirth (born December 31, 1958 in Princeton , New Jersey ) is an American dancer , theater, film and television actress .

Life

After training in dance and ballet, Bebe Neuwirth began her career as a dancer, played on Broadway , including in A Chorus Line, and won a Tony Award in 1986 for her performance in Sweet Charity . She received a second in 1997 for Best Female Dancer for the Broadway musical Chicago .

She became known to a larger audience through the portrayal of the psychologist and psychiatrist Dr. Lilith Sternin in the American television series Cheers between 1986 and 1993, a character she sporadically embodied in the series Frasier (1993-2004), a spin-off of Cheers , and in 1992 in an episode of the series Überflieger (Wings) . Neuwirth received two Emmys for portraying Lilith Sternin . From 2014 to 2017 she was in the series Madam Secretary .

Neuwirth's best-known films include Green Card ( Peter Weir , 1990), Bugsy ( Barry Levinson , 1991), Jumanji ( Joe Johnston , 1995) and Celebrity - Schön. Rich. Famous. ( Woody Allen , 1998).

She is the daughter of the mathematician Lee Neuwirth . From 1984 to 1991 she was married to the theater director Paul Dorman.
