Hawaii Crime Story (Original title: The Big Bounce ) from 2004 is an American gangster comedy with Owen Wilson in the lead role. It is the film adaptation of the novel The Big Bounce by Elmore Leonard , which was published in 1969.

The petty crook Jack Ryan escapes from his problems to Hawaii . There he first tries to earn money legally. When he literally sided with the locals on the hotel construction site of the unscrupulous businessman Ray Ritchie, he was fired. After he is out of prison again, Ray's errand boy Bob Rogers Junior tells him to leave the island. However, Jack stays and gets a job in the bungalow complex of District Judge Walter Crewes. He's also hooking up with Ritchie's girlfriend, Nancy. This tries to persuade him that stored in Ray's weekend house mafia - bribes to steal. Jack is extremely suspicious, as everyone he meets in Hawaii seems to think of himself first of all.
Reviews
The 2003 film was not particularly popular with the critics and was also a commercial disaster. Production cost was an estimated $ 50 million, but the movie only grossed $ 6,801,716 at the box office.
Lisa Schwartzmann compared the movie in Entertainment Weekly to a guacamole dip . The film is said to be “spicy and tasty” and “goes well with some chilled drinks” (“It's served whipped and diced as casually as guacamole dip, tart and tasty and good with a couple of cold drinks.”).
Kevin Carr from "filmthreat.com" praised the cast, but criticized the lack of finesse of the story.
The Austin Chronicle described the film as "not only bad, but above all simply uninteresting" ("The worst thing about Bounce isn't that it's bad but that it just isn't interesting.").

The screenplay is based on Elmore Leonard 's novel of the same name from 1969. This is his first work to be assigned to the “crime genre”, having previously mainly written westerns.
The entire film was shot on the North Shore of Oahu . In the original book, the action takes place in Detroit .
The novel was filmed in 1969 with Ryan O'Neal and Leigh Taylor-Young in the leading roles.
Actually, Kris Kristofferson also played a bigger role, but his part was cut out.
