Lee Daniel

Lee Daniel (born January 23, 1962 in Dallas , Texas ) is an American cameraman . He was best known through his longstanding collaboration with director Richard Linklater .

Life

Daniel made his first Super 8 films as a teenager . Daniel cites filmmakers Stan Brakhage and Kenneth Anger as an influence. In the early 1980s he moved to Austin, Texas , where he began studying at the University of Texas at Austin .

From 1984 he worked there for the production company Texas Pacific Film , where he learned his trade with Richard Kooris, among others . He met Richard Linklater through the Heart of Texas Filmmakers, a group of Super 8 filmmakers. Linklater founded the Austin Film Society with Daniel in 1985 .

In 1988 Daniel was hired as an assistant cameraman in the production of the film DOA - Murder On Arrival . From 1990 onwards the first engagements as the chief cameraman followed. In 1991 he was responsible for camera work for Linklater's debut feature film Rumtreiber . Also in Linklater's next films Confusion - Summer of the Freaky , Before Sunrise and SubUrbia - Sixpacks, Sex + Supermarkets .

Then he turned to the work on documentaries. It was not until 2002 that there was a renewed collaboration with Linklater for the film Boyhood , which was filmed over a period of more than 10 years and dealt with growing up as a boy. In 2004 Daniel also filmed Linklater's next directorial work, Before Sunset . Their last collaboration alongside Boyhood was in 2006 with the film Fast Food Nation . After that, Daniel turned back mainly to making documentaries.
