Twin Lakes ("twin lakes ") is the name of two interconnected reservoirs north of the city of Paris in Edgar County in Illinois . They serve the urban water supply and local recreation.
The smaller western lake was created in 1895 by the damming of Sugar Creek and is now approximately 25 acres . When its capacity was no longer sufficient, the city built a second, similarly sized reservoir further east around 1916. After a major drought in 1954, when the eastern lake dried out completely and the western lake largely dried out, it was decided to build a third, larger dam further downstream on Sugar Creek. This earth dam, called Third Lake Dam , completed in 1961, is 11.9 m high and 326 m long. It increased the storage volume and area of the eastern Twin Lake considerably. Together, the Twin Lakes form a single 90 to 95 hectare area of water with normal damming (201 m above sea level ).
The Twin Lakes are the oldest and most important recreational area in the city of Paris. The construction of the Twin Lakes Park began at the end of the 19th century. The park offers picnic areas, mini golf and baseball fields, and boat rentals , among other things .
