from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Asiata Alaelua Vaʻalepa Saleʻimoa Vaʻai (born May 25, 1945 , Satupaʻitea ; † September 2, 2010 ) was a Samoan politician and lawyer. He was a member of the Fono (parliament) for the territorial constituency of Satupaʻitea and the leader of the Samoan United Independents Political Party and later the Samoan Democratic United Party .

Life

Asiata was the son of former Prime Minister Va'ai Kolone and brother of Va'ai Papu Vailupe , a member of the Tautua Samoa Party . He worked as a barrister in Samoa and New Zealand before moving to the Pacific Islands Forum in Suva , Fiji . From 1985 to 1987 he served as President of the Samoa Law Society and from 1998 to 2001 of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association .

Va'ai was elected to parliament in 2001 for the Constituency Satupa'itea. He was re-elected in 2006 and became leader of the SDUP in August of the same year. His election, however, led to a mockery of the party, whereupon it was no longer recognized by parliament.
