The Cathédrale de l'Immaculée-Conception de Victoria (also: Immaculate Conception Cathedral Cathedral of Victoria , Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception ) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Victoria , the capital of the African island state Seychelles , on the island of Mahé .

location

The church is located on Olivier Maradan Street in the northeast of the La Rivière Anglaise district near the Victoria Clocktower (Tour de l'Horloge) and the Anglican Cathedral. A park hill joins to the north, which forms the border with the Mont Buxton district. The church stands slightly above the street. A flight of stairs leads to the entrance. It is oriented to the north.

The church was built in 1874 with reminiscences of the French colonial style. The three-aisled church has a cruciform floor plan and arched windows. The roof is supported by a simple beam construction. The entrance is covered by a portico with eight slender columns. On the north side, lower buildings are built in the corners between the cross arms and the nave.

administration

The church serves as the bishopric of the Diocese of Port Victoria ( Dioecesis Portus Victoriae / Dioecesis seychellarum ), which was founded in 1892 by Pope Leo XIII. was established. The first renovation of the cathedral began that same year.
