The Martinsville Sanitarium is a former historic sanatorium or a former hotel ( Martinsville Mineral Springs Hotel ) in Martinsville , in Morgan County , in the US state of Indiana , in the United States . The building is at 239 West Harrison Street .

The area in and around Martinsville was internationally for nearly a century as a health resort ( Spa known). Physically and mentally ailing patients from all over the world came here to curative health clinics or spas, which over time have increasingly settled here, among other things because there are many artesian water sources in this area .

In the early 1880s, a wide audience from all walks of life came to this spa town, including mainly business people from the eastern United States, judges, lawyers and politicians. The top years of the Martinsville Sanitarium were between 1890 and 1930. The sanatorium closed its doors in 1971.

The current building was constructed between 1925 and 1926 after the spa area was expanded and renovated. As such, the sanatorium was one of the last in operation until 1957 and was then converted into a hotel or old people's home . Between 1967 and 1982 ⅔ of the complex were demolished and apartment complexes were built on the same site .

According to the National Register of Historic Places , the sanatorium was of particular significance from 1925 to 1949 and from 1950 to 1974. The architecture is kept in the Tudor Revival .
