Ripley County is a county in the state of Indiana in the United States . The county seat is Versailles .

The county is located almost in the extreme southeast of Indiana, about 35 km from Ohio and Kentucky , and covers an area of ​​1,160 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Franklin County , Dearborn County , Ohio County , Switzerland County , Jefferson County , Jennings County, and Decatur County .

history

Ripley County was formed on December 27, 1816 from parts of Dearborn County and Jefferson County. It was named after Eleazer Wheelock Ripley , a hero in the British-American War .

As of the 2000 census , Ripley County had 26,523 people in 9,842 households and 7,273 families. The population density was 23 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.30 percent white, 0.05 percent African American, 0.35 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian and 0.54 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.41 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.93 percent of the population.
