It currently houses the Capitain Petzel Gallery : Listed exhibition pavilion at Karl-Marx-Allee 45 in Berlin-Mitte, built 1960–1963, formerly Kunst im Heim .

The Gisela Capitain gallery has existed in Cologne since 1986 . The founder and managing director is Gisela Capitain (* 1952 in Selb / Upper Franconia ). The focus is on German and American contemporary art .

history

After graduating from high school, Gisela Capitain moved to Berlin , where she studied sociology and philosophy and completed a teaching degree. In 1977 she met the artist Martin Kippenberger and founded Kippenberger's office with him in 1978 , where exhibitions by young artists were shown. She worked as a primary school teacher and in the art world until she moved to Cologne in 1983. After an assistantship with the gallery owner Max Hetzler , she opened her own gallery in 1986, which today is one of the most influential in Germany.

Catalog raisonné Martin Kippenberger

After Martin Kippenberger's death in 1997, the gallery represented his estate and also dedicated the 30th anniversary show to him. A catalog raisonné of the paintings will be created under the title Estate Martin Kippenberger (see: Literature).

Gallery Capitain Petzel in Berlin

Since autumn 2008, Galerie Gisela Capitain and the Petzel Gallery, New York, have been presenting solo exhibitions by the artists they represent in a joint gallery in the listed, former exhibition pavilion on Karl-Marx-Allee in Berlin-Mitte.

Award

  • In 2014 Gisela Capitain received the European Gallery Award from the Federation of European Art Galleries Association (FEAGA) for her life's work ("Lifetime Award" ) .
