Gillian Carnegie

Gillian Carnegie (* 1971 in Suffolk ) is a British artist . She has a BA Hons. in Fine Arts from Camberwell School of Art and a Masters in Painting from the Royal College of Art . Gillian Carnegie lives and works in London.

In 2005 Carnegie was nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize and was considered a favorite. Her nomination received some irony in the British press. The Daily Telegraph headlined : “Turner Prize shocker: the favorite is a woman who paints flowers. Whatever next? ” Simon Starling finally won the award .

Gillian Carnegie's works are based on classical genres such as still life , landscape painting and nude studies , as well as on abstract and monochrome representation techniques. Carnegie creates her pictures mainly in oil on different media ( canvas , wood , paper , linen ) and, among other things, turns them around. a. the impasto process, in which several layers of paint are superimposed in such a way that the paintings develop very vividly, almost three-dimensional effects. In addition to oil, Carnegie also works with charcoal or makes etchings . Many of her works form series that present the same or similar motifs in varying representations.
