The Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean , or Mudam for short , is Luxembourg's museum of modern art. It is located on the grounds of Fort Thüngen ( Dräi Eechelen ) on the Kirchberg plateau in Luxembourg City . The Mudam is managed by the Fondation Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, with substantial funding from the Luxembourg state. The chairman of the board is Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg .

The architect of the building , which opened on July 1, 2006 , is Ieoh Ming Pei , which is why the museum is popularly known as the “Pei-Musée”. The museum is named Grand Duke Jeans , father of the current Grand Duke Henri .

Emergence

The plans to build a museum for modern art arose at the end of the 1980s when it became clear that there was no platform for such art in Luxembourg. Since Luxembourg was to become European Capital of Culture in 1995 , the Santer government asked the architect Ieoh Ming Pei for a plan for an architecturally outstanding museum building. Fort Thüngen on the Kirchberg plateau was chosen as the location, as Pei liked the idea of combining the old with the new.

The first plans that Pei presented in the early 1990s met with strong opposition: some found the building too big and expensive, others feared that the museum would destroy the remains of Fort Thüngen. Pei was commissioned to develop a plan without the Dräi Eechelen building , and it was assured that a fortress museum would be built in it. In 1996 a bill for the construction of the Mudam was submitted to the Juncker- Poo's government , which came into force on January 17, 1997. Almost exactly two years later, on January 22, 1999, the foundation stone was laid.

The construction of the 88 million euro museum was delayed again by court proceedings, so that the work was not completed until 2006 and the museum was opened on July 1st.

The museum

From 2000 to 2008 Marie-Claude Beaud was director of the Mudam. From 2001 onwards she put the collection together with the help of a commission of experts. The exhibits had been acquired since 1996 and did not build on any existing collection. Most of the exhibits come from Luxembourgish artists or from neighboring countries. There are currently around 230 works by over 100 artists, which are presented on three floors with around 3000 square meters of exhibition space. Many of them are commissioned works that could be adapted to the premises.

In the museum different art genres are shown, ranging from painting, drawing, photography, multimedia, fashion, design, graphics and sound to architecture.

Around 30 artists were involved in the Be the Artists' Guest project, in which they were able to integrate their works.

In the first year after the opening, more than 115,000 visitors were counted, a record for a Luxembourg museum. The Mudam Boutique , integrated in the building, offers a wide range of contemporary art media, postcards and gifts from toys to designer items. The Mudam Café offers a variety of gluten-free vegetarian and vegan dishes.

Successor directors after Marie-Claude Beaud were Enrico Lunghi from 2009 to 2017 and Suzanne Cotter from January 1, 2018 .
