Roland Fischer has been experimenting with large-format portraits since 1980 and began to develop a new imagery in photography. This changed aesthetic of photography generally established itself in contemporary art as photographic art at the end of the 20th century . From 1984 the series "Nuns and Monks" was created. It was dedicated to people who, abandoning their former identity, live in decided seclusion from the public. The "Los Angeles Portraits" followed in the 1990s. The motif were people of different ages who stand in still water up to their shoulders. Because of the need for numerous outdoor pools, the blue sky and the light, this series of images was realized in California, where the photographs were taken with a large-format camera . Large structures were built to control the lighting, the image section and the staging of the motif were precisely controlled. Another group of works, “Cathedrals”, came into being from the end of the 1990s. Fischer blended the frontal external facades of mainly Spanish and French church buildings with their monumental interiors.

The photographs of the series “Facades”, taken continuously since 1998, show representative architectures of international banks and corporations. At the same time, the first two collective portraits "Students" and "Workers", composed of 450 individual images, were created in China in 1998. The series was continued in 2000 with “Farmers” and in 2002 with “Soldiers”. In these 172 cm by 400 cm large tableaus, all persons depicted are named below their portraits. The individual persons were always recorded from the front. In 2003, the 300 cm by 2420 cm installation “Pilgrims” was created, made up of 1,050 photographs of pilgrims in Santiago de Compostela .

At the beginning of the 21st century, Fischer took up the concept of “Los Angeles Portraits” again in China with the “Chinese Pool Portraits”. Because of the smog and hardly any outdoor swimming pool, he realized the recordings in large film studios in Shanghai and Beijing .

In the “new architectures” series, Fischer has been devoting himself to archetypes of modern and contemporary architecture since 2004 (e.g. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe , Le Corbusier , Lloyd Wright , Ieoh Ming Pei , Álvaro Siza Vieira , Luis Barragán Morfín , Frank Gehry ) .

Fischer's works are in the possession of international museums and private collections.
