List of cathedrals in Spain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A cathedral is a Catholic church that serves as a seat and chair ( kathedra ) for the bishop of a diocese . It is the main church of a diocese.

Cathedrals are an important part of Spain's cultural heritage and have far-reaching historical, religious and architectural significance. The Spanish National Plan for Cathedrals ( Plan de Catedrales ) lists ninety-one churches, including cathedrals, concathedrals , former cathedrals and the Sagrada Família basilica .

Cathedrals are naturally large and have been built with great expenditure of material and labor. As a rule, the construction activity for each building extended over several centuries, so that the result is a mixture of several epochs and styles. The buildings are administered by the cathedral chapter and financed by the diocese, although often the bishop himself, the king or believers donated money for the completion of a cathedral structure. This has resulted in the largest and most beautiful cathedrals in the most important and richest cities of the time.

Construction always started at the apse ; then an altar was consecrated to be able to celebrate Holy Mass . Then the transept and the nave were completed. The architectural styles of Baroque and Classicism found their way into later construction work : the architects, whose task it was to ensure a certain uniformity of the building, often had to build completely new rooms or facades in order to gain some artistic freedom.

Visigoth Empire

The Christianity reached into Hispania early Foot: already one of Paul's letters mention the desire of St. Paul preaching in Hispania. Around the year 300 the church was already firmly organized, as the implementation of the Synod of Elvira (around 306) shows. Later, the conquests of the Visigoths were to force Arianism and the doctrine of the Trinity to coexist, which was valid until the Councils of Toledo and the conversion of King Rekkared I to Catholicism in 587.

During this entire time the necessary church infrastructure was created, especially churches and cathedrals ; of the buildings of that time, however, only remains and rubble have survived, as the building materials were later used for other church buildings and mosques . Examples of structures that were built from this structure are the Romanesque cathedral of Barcelona and the Mezquita of Córdoba . Even the Cathedral of Palencia traces its origins back to the Crypt of San Antolín, which was built in the second half of the 7th century.
