The Cathedral of Tarrassa or the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit ( Catalan Catedral de Terrassa or Basílica del Sant Esperit ) is a church in Terrassa , Catalonia , Spain . The cathedral of the Diocese of Terrassa , created in 2004 , has the title of a minor basilica and is a Catalan cultural heritage.

history

The church was built between 1574 and 1616 as a parish church. It was built in the Gothic style despite the Baroque style that was current at the time . During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) it was damaged by a fire inside and was used at times as a car park.

Pope Pius XII elevated the church to the rank of a minor basilica in 1953 and the restoration was completed in 1958. In 1999, the redesign of the bell tower and facade was completed, the upper part of which was unfinished. The neo-Gothic style entrance atrium of the basilica, built in 1918, also suffered from the effects of the war and was rebuilt with the apostle sculptures by Nicanor Carballo to replace the sculptures by Josep Llimona , who were lost during the fire. It was consecrated in 1994.

Since 2004 the Basilica of the Holy Spirit has been the seat of the new diocese of Tarrassa. It is in the tradition of the Diocese of Egara , which existed between the 5th and 8th centuries and was dissolved as a result of the Saracen invasions, but of which the Terrassa church family still testifies.

architecture

The Holy Spirit Basilica has a single nave with side chapels between the buttresses. After the transept, it closes with a polygonal apse . The high altar with choir stalls was created in the 1940s by the architect Lluís Bonet i Garí and the painter Antoni Vila i Arrufat. With its sculptural reliefs, statues and choir stalls, it is considered to be one of the outstanding stage sets of the immediate post-war period. The image of St. Peter in the center of the altar stands out.

The Santo Cristo Chapel stands on the left arm of the transept, where the parish museum was established in 1992. In the background there is the procession float for Maundy Thursday, gold and silver objects as well as various books and ancient documents, such as B. a miniature evangelist book from the 11th century are presented.

A group of sculptures depicting the Entombment of Christ stands on the right arm of the transept. It is the most important work of art in the basilica and one of the few examples of Renaissance sculpture in Catalonia, completed by Martín Díez de Liatzasolo in 1544. The group consists of eight towering figures with Christ reclining in the middle. The group was destroyed during the civil war, but the pieces were kept in the churches of San Pedro and rebuilt after the war.

The Santísimo chapel and the sacristy form a complex on the south side of the basilica, the work of the modernist architect Lluís Muncunill i Parellada (1907), designer of important buildings in the city of Tarrasa. The parabolic arches on the roof are particularly noteworthy.
