History and architecture

The church was built on the traditional place of the apparition of Mary in 1088 of the Virgen del Prado ("Virgin of the Meadow"). The first, Romanesque chapel is dated to the 13th century after the expulsion of the Moors. The cathedral was built from the beginning of the 15th century in honor of the military orders , especially the Order of Calatrava , which can be recognized by the coat of arms. It was built in sections from the west side, with the Gothic and Renaissance influences . As the last section following the nave , the apse was built by 1514 , the church was completed with the construction of the vaulted ceiling in 1580. The cathedral essentially consists of a large nave with a height of 34 meters, a length of 53 meters and a width of 18 meters. The Lady Chapel and the sacristy were created in the Baroque style of the 17th century. Today's tower with its four floors and a height of 62 meters is made of stone masonry. It was only added in 1825 on the basis of the previous tower, which was destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake . With the creation of the Ciudad Real Territorial Prelature and the Diocese of the Priorate of Military Orders, the church was elevated to a cathedral in 1875, the diocese was created in 1980. During the Spanish Civil War , the cathedral was used as a military depot. As a result, many of their treasures were stolen or destroyed. Pope Paul VI also awarded the cathedral the title of a minor basilica in 1967 and the Virgin of Prado statue was canonically crowned .

The architecturally oldest part of the cathedral is the entrance portal, the so-called Puerta del Perdón ( Gate of Forgiveness ). Her style corresponds to the late 13th or early 14th century and the reign of is Alfonso X attributed. It is believed that the portal originally came from an older church. The southern entrance was created in the Renaissance period.

Furnishing

The splendid Baroque altar with colored carvings is the work of Giraldo de Merlo and his son-in-law, the painter Juan de Hasten. The work on behalf of Juan de Vilaseca was completed by the brothers Cristóbal and Pedro Ruiz Elvira in 1616 under Andrés de la Concha. The altarpiece is dedicated to the Virgen del Prado , the patron saint of Ciudad Real. The carved walnut benches date from the first half of the 18th century. The sacristy is next to the Becerril Peace Altar and is decorated with several paintings such as The Beheading of John the Baptist by Eugenio Caxès.
