The Cathedral of Tortosa or the Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary ( Catalan Catedral de Santa Maria ) is a church in Tortosa in the Spanish province of Tarragona . The cathedral of the Diocese of Tortosa is dedicated to the Virgin Mary . history

In the history of Tortosa, a small Visigoth church and a mosque followed on the site of the ancient Roman Forum . After the Reconquista in 1148, Raimund Berengar IV gave it to the bishop along with the surrounding buildings and transformed it into a cathedral with a monastery of the Augustinian canons , from whose ranks the bishops were elected until 1369, and in 1772 the monastery was secularized. Between 1158 and 1178 a Romanesque cathedral was built on a cross-shaped floor plan, of which only the neighboring Gothic cloister has survived.

In May 1347 the foundation stone of the Gothic cathedral was laid. According to plans by Benito Dalguayre, construction began with the apse and continued for a long time. The radial chapels were completed around 1400, the altar was consecrated in 1441. In 1487 the vault of the first yoke after the choir was completed. In 1597 the church was consecrated without completion of the construction work . In 1620 the baroque design of the facade began, which was finished without completion in the middle of the 18th century. The last restoration was completed in 2015.

Layout

architecture

The cathedral was built as a three-aisled basilica with side chapels and has no transept. The side aisles go directly into the ambulatory with nine radially arranged chapels, which form a second passage due to the lack of partition walls. This results in three rows of narrow stained glass windows staggered. The older side chapels still received ribbed vaults , later barrel vaults with a coffered structure. The bell tower is on the right side of the entrance. A buttress was built around the church .

Furnishing

The wooden retable of the main altar Maria Stern impresses with its paintings from the 14th century and depicts various stories of Jesus and Mary. In the baptistery there is the baptismal font from the 15th century with a plaque of Benedict XIII. The altar of the Transfiguration from the 2nd half of the 15th century is attributed to the workshop of Jaume Huguet ; it was moved from one of the radial chapels to the refectory. The choir stalls in the Renaissance style by Cristóbal de Salamanca was created at the end of the 16th century and is now in the old dormitory of the monastery.
