Stefan Chatrath (* 1976 ) is a German economist specializing in sports marketing .

Chat Rath studied at the Free University in Berlin Business Administration and received his doctorate there then. His doctoral thesis won 2nd place at the Science Prize of the German Football Association . He also studied at the University of Birmingham Economics .

Chatrath was appointed professor for sports marketing at the University of Applied Sciences Europe , where he was the head of the program for sports and event management as well as the officer for international affairs and university development in the sports, media & event department. He was also the deputy chairman of the Scientific Commission of the State Sports Association of Berlin. His teaching and research focuses on sports marketing, ticketing and ethics in sports management.

After Chatrath had published the article “The Sorrows of Young Torunarigha ” in Novo magazine , for which he also worked as a sports editor, he was accused of downplaying racism. He was then released from all teaching activities. The Landessportbund Berlin also distanced itself from his statements and removed him from the Scientific Commission.

"The Sorrows of Young Torunarigha"

Chatrath was heavily criticized for his article in Novo magazine on February 24, 2020. He was accused of playing down racist insults. Among other things, Chatrath said: “Footballers who play professionally have to endure insults, that's part of it.” “Yes, that may hurt, but the incidents took place in a football stadium, where it is part of the opponent being covered with ridicule and malice “, Wrote Chatrath:“ Of course I can't gloss over it when someone in the stadium imitates monkey noises to insult black players. That's racist, no question about it. ”But:“ If the game is not endangered, anything goes. We have to accept that anger, frustration and disdain for the opponent also have their place in the stadium. If you can't handle it, you'd better stay at home. ”Chatrath blamed Torunarigha for overreacting emotionally:“ He should have had his feelings under control. ”The Landessportbund Berlin distances itself. The University of Applied Sciences Europe released Chatrath from his duties.

In a February 26 statement, Chatrath apologized. I am sorry that he "hurt the feelings of Jordan Torunarigha and others". He wrote that as the son of an Indian immigrant, he himself had experiences with everyday racism and that he rejects racism of any kind. But he also pointed out again that he thinks it is better if players do not allow themselves to be provoked. It was primarily a matter of pleading for a "strong and self-confident handling of the players" with racist insults.
