The Valencia Cathedral ( Catedral de Santa María de Valencia ) is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Valencia . It is located in the northeast part of the old town of Valencia and is dedicated to Saint Mary .

Building history

On the site of the church there was once a Roman temple that became a church and was converted into a mosque after the Muslim conquest . After the reconquest in 1237 it became a church again. Construction on the current Gothic style building began in 1262 and was completed in the 15th century. The documents mention Pere Balaguer , Francesc Baldomar , Pere Compte , Antoni Dalmau and Martí Llobet as master builders . The octagonal dome is attested from the time of Bishop Blanes (1356-1369); at the beginning of the 15th century it was rebuilt. In 1418, the builders of the La Catedral in Barcelona visited Valencia to see the dome.

The Puerta del Palau portal was built before 1270. The Puerta de los Apóstoles portal dates from the 14th century.

As early as the 1470s, the influence of the Renaissance was noticeable under the construction management of Paolo San Leocadio and Francisco Pagano. Later some renovations were carried out in the styles of the Renaissance, the Baroque (especially the west facade, which was completed between 1703 and 1741 and is one of the most important works of Spanish Baroque) and Classicism .

The
El Micalet tower

The octagonal bell tower , known in Valencian as El Micalet (Spanish El Miguelete ), was built in the 14th century on the site of an older tower. Its height is 51 meters, which also corresponds to its circumference. It was divided into four equally high parts, of which the upper - richly decorated - part contains the bells.

The cathedral suffered some damage during the Spanish Civil War , especially in the choir area , the interior of which was dismantled after the war. The organ was also relocated during this time . The Gothic structure of the nave , the transept and the dome has been restored and stylistically adjusted since 1972 .

Furnishing

Holy cup

In the Capilla del Santo Caliz designated chapter house from the 15th century in the southeast of the building which is Holy Chalice kept that there - is since the year 1506 - with interruptions. It was probably made in the period from the 3rd century BC to the 1st century BC.

Bells

14 historically significant bells hang in the 51 m high bell tower, the Torre del Miguelete or Micalet . 11 bells hang between the sound arcades of the tower; they are almost exclusively rung by hand by a bell guild, by ringing them with a full turn of 360 degrees. 3 more bells hang in the tower tower; they serve the clock. The hour striking bell is called Micalet. It is the largest and heaviest bell in the tower.
