The Cathedral of Solsona ( Catalan Catedral de Santa Maria de Solsona ) is a Catholic church in Solsona in the Spanish province of Lleida . The cathedral of the Solsona diocese is dedicated to Mary and Peter . It was created from the end of the 12th to the 18th century with Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque style elements. The cathedral is a listed building and bears the title of a minor basilica .

history

The current church has two previous buildings, a pre-Romanesque church from 977 and a Romanesque church which was consecrated in 1070 and of which the three apses, the lower part of the bell tower and some elements of the cloister have been preserved. The current cathedral was built in the late thirteenth century in the Gothic style as a monastery church of the Augustinians and became a cathedral in 1593 with the creation of the diocese by Pope Clement VIII . The building was completed in 1630 with the completion of the choir . In the place of the former monastery, the Bishop's Palace is now part of the building complex. 1953 received the church by Pope Pius XII. awarded the title of a minor basilica.

Building

The single-nave church was roofed with ribbed vaults . The main altar is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary . To the left of the transept is the altar dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Right next to it is the parish church of Solsona with the altar of the Mare de Déu de la Mercè ('Madonna in Protection'), its important, Baroque altarpiece was made by the Catalan sculptor Carles Morató. To the right of the transept is the Mare de Déu del Claustre ('Our Lady of the Convent') chapel , patron saint of the city. The 12th century Romanesque stone image was created by the master Gilabert (Gilabertus) of Toulouse. The 105 centimeter tall figure is one of the most important sculptures of the Catalan Romanesque. In the exterior decoration of the building, the two entrances are also striking. The main entrance from the 17th century and the side, the side from the 18th century, which replaced a Romanesque portal from 1070. The organ from 1853 is the work of Gaietà Vilardebó.
