Roda de Isábena is a small place (2016: 37 inhabitants) in the valley of the Río Isábena in the Aragonese Pyrenees . It has been part of the municipality of Isábena in the Comarca Ribagorza in the Spanish province of Huesca in Aragon since 1964 . The place was the seat of a bishop in the 9th and 10th centuries and is still home to the old Cathedral of San Vicente . Roda de Isábena is the smallest place in Spain with a cathedral .
history
The place was since 956 the center of the county Ribagorza . The first church was consecrated in the same year . The place became a bishopric early on and remained so until 1149 when Lleida (Lérida) was recaptured . Roda stood in the front against the Islamic kingdom of Lérida. In 1006 Roda was conquered and destroyed by the Moors under 'Abd al-Malik , son of Almansor , but was recaptured as early as 1010. Under King Sancho Ramirez of Aragon , a new Romanesque church was consecrated in 1067 and was completed around 1125. During the War of the Spanish Succession , the War of Independence and the Carlist Wars , the situation in the area deteriorated. In 1843, the disaster also affected the cathedral. It was converted into a parish church . In 1964, the former municipalities of Puebla de Roda and Roda de Isábena were merged to form the municipality of Isábena , which was joined by other towns in 1966, 1970 and 1977. In 1979 the cathedral museum was hit by an extensive art theft.
Townscape
The three-aisled Cathedral of San Vicente with a portal from the 13th century and a tower rebuilt in the 18th century are in the village . The renaissance vestibule opens to an elevated square, which is surrounded by “noble buildings” (Schomann). Absiden and a hall crypt with beltless ridge vaults are the oldest parts, the Romanesque cloister (after 1150) with the chapter house leans against the north wall of the cathedral . The cathedral museum connects to this. The crypt in which the tomb of St. Raimund von Roda (Ramón de Roda) and which was once completely painted, still has a depiction of the baptism of Christ from around 1120. In the place, which is still partially surrounded by a wall, there is also the bishop's palace.
