Friedrich Magerl

Friedrich Paul Magerl (born May 21, 1931 in Tregist , Styria ) is an Austrian surgeon and pioneer in spinal surgery.

Life

Magerl studied medicine at the University of Graz and became a member of Corps Joannea in 1952 . After the state examination in 1954, he worked as an assistant in the Graz anatomy department for nine years . His clinical training in general , trauma and neurosurgery lasted only seven years. In 1970 he became senior physician at the St. Gallen Cantonal Hospital , a year later head physician and 1987 chief physician for orthopedic surgery. He received his doctorate as Dr. med. and turned to spinal surgery. As early as 1971 he developed the front Dens screw connection. In 1976 he suggested external fixators for the treatment of unstable spinal fractures. The 1985 internal fixator was a milestone in trauma surgery. With Klaus Zielke (Tübingen, Bad Wildungen) and Jürgen Harms (Langensteinbach), Magerl is a nestor in spine surgery in German-speaking countries. For these outstanding achievements, the Friedrich Alexander University awarded him the Dr. Fritz Erler Fund. Magerl worked more than he wrote, but nevertheless became a professor .
