Guy Maddin , OM (born February 28, 1956 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Canadian director of feature and short films and a screenwriter.

life and work

Maddin did not attend any formal film training, instead he learned his trade by watching films, especially with his friends John Paizs (* 1957) and Steve Snyder. Paisz as a filmmaker and Snyder as a lecturer in production at the University of Manitoba , Maddin finally got the idea to use his knowledge and film himself.

Guy Maddin's special quality is his predilection for recreating the style and aesthetics of old silent films and early sound films . Apart from this stylistic characteristic of his work, his films are thematically characterized primarily by the use of clichés , psychological-sexual conflict situations, by bizarre to surreal stories and their bizarre humor. It is this confident fusion of early film techniques with a postmodern sensibility that make Maddin's films distinctive.

His silent film Brand Upon The Brain! 2006 accompaniment Live one was in numerous performances with the orchestra , foley artists , a singer and a storyteller shown. In addition to Isabella Rossellini , Laurie Anderson , Crispin Glover , Daniel Handler , Udo Kier , Lou Reed , Eli Wallach and Guy Maddin himself had appearances as live narrators .

In 2011 he was appointed to the competition jury of the 61st Berlin International Film Festival .

For his work as a screenwriter, Maddin was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2018 , which awards the Oscars every year.
