Goshka Macuga (* 1967 in Warsaw ) is a Polish - British conceptual artist .

Goshka Macuga studied at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and the Goldsmiths, University of London . She was one of four artists who were nominated for the Turner Prize in 2008. In 2011 she was awarded the Arnold Bode Prize . Macuga lives and works in London.

Macuga works in a wide variety of media including sculpture , installation , jacquard woven carpets, mirror work, robotics , photography , architecture and design .

Macuga is known for her versatile way of working, due to which she mixes the roles of collectors , curators and artists. Macuga tries to revive the ideas behind the works by combining her own original works with elements that other artists quote. In addition, she integrates historical artifacts into her installations. By embedding historical events in new subjective contexts, Macuga suggests that history is never written objectively and that all truth is determined by context.

She creates fictional museum exhibitions and thereby imitates the work of the chief artistic curators and archivists . Macugu presents her own stories to the audience, based on documents and objects, films and photographs she found, as well as foreign works of art. By changing its artistic context , it refers to new associations , connections and dependencies and thus offers new interpretations.

Installations

Cave

The first installations are arranged exhibitions of works by other artists, which are hung on crumpled gray paper (Cave, 1999) or a photo wallpaper with a view of the Alps , in a house in traditional folk architecture.

In other works, Macugu places the objects to be presented in various types of cupboards or integrates monographically famous artists such as Frances Picabia , Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol into the frame she has designed.

São Paulo Biennale

In later works she makes use of architecture for more complex narratives. In 2006 she designed a building in São Paulo that was inspired by Oscar Niemeyer 's projects . Inside there were works by artists participating in the Biennale as well as books or prints from Brazil bought by Macuga that relate to the past of this country, its religion , ecology and art history . This work confronts Brazilian modern art with the past and gives it a metaphysical element.

What's in a name

In the installation What's in a Name from 2007 Macuga takes up esoteric ideas and connects the life story of the founder of the Theosophical Society Helena Blavatskys with a story about the composer Giuseppe Tartini , who is haunted by Satan in a dream . Maguca collects photographs and documents on both people and uses them to create a completely reinterpreted story. In this work, she incessantly confronts art with reality .

Nature of the Beast

In the 2009 exhibition Nature of the Beast at the Whitechapel Gallery in London, she shows a copy of Picasso's picture Guernica executed as a textile work , which was exhibited in the same gallery in 1939 and inspired supporters of the civil war in Spain to organize a communist rally.

Tapestry in the headquarters of the UN

In 2003, a tapestry was veiled at the UN headquarters in New York during Colin Powell's speech when he was justifying armed intervention in Iraq . The bust of Powell will therefore be part of her installation next to an Islamic prayer rug, archival film chronicles from the Spanish Civil War , and showcases in the form of a round table with documents from the gallery's archives relating to the exhibition of the picture by Picasso in London.

Untitled

The work Untitled from 2011 has several levels of meaning . It shows an enormous tapestry that imitates an envelope with stamps with the portrait of Lech Wałęsa , leader of the Solidarność union . The work ties in with the famous happening by Tadeusz Kantor from 1967 and questions the current assessment of the recent history of Poland.

Macugu's endeavors can be understood as a continuous vivisection of recent history and at the same time embodies the endeavor to sum up the most interesting and significant phenomena in contemporary modernism.

dOCUMENTA (13) Article Digitate Collage for in Kassel

During dOCUMENTA (13) the artist exhibited in the rotunda in the Fridericianum . The Digitate Collage work for consisted of two tapestries. She created a ghostly zone of half-truth, a structure of interrelated temporal levels, a potential getting involved in an illusion that deals with the role of art and the world as a whole. The work consists of two tapestries in front of whose opposing panorama-like backgrounds a multitude of historical references as simultaneously existing reality. In the role of the embedded journalist , Macuga took photos at two cultural events that took place in Kassel and Kabul . The image material for the first tapestry was taken in Kassel during the award of the Arnold Bode Prize in October 2011. It shows the award winner with the curators and management team of the award committee as well as the dOCUMENTA (13). Macuga mounted this group picture on the lawn of the Karlsaue for a semi-fictional event, which was mounted on a rounded wall in a pavilion in Bagh-e-Babur near the Kabul Queen's Palace.

The second carpet is a parallel portrait of the guests at a gala dinner that the artist held in Kabul in February 2012. It shows employees and representatives of institutions such as the Afghan Ministry of Information and Culture and the Afghan National Museum, but also UNESCO archaeologists . This peaceful reception in the garden provides an ambiguous background for dealing with the political and economic problems resulting from the collapse and reconstruction.
